What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are third molars. They develop and erupt between the ages of 14 and 25. Pain-free, healthy third molars that completely erupt do not require any treatment. However, problems with third molars are common. Nine out of ten people have at least one wisdom tooth removed.

Typically, having wisdom teeth at a younger age leads to less chances of complications. Having the wisdom teeth extracted at a younger age also decreases the loss of time away from work and school.

Development of root structure near the sinuses and the nerve, increases the chances of complications.

Why Do They Cause Problems?

Most people do not have enough room in their mouth for wisdom teeth. This causes the third molars to erupt partially or not at all. Impacted, or trapped, teeth will cause problems that affect your oral health.

This can be due to the tissue overlying the tooth (operculum) trapping food and bacteria, and can lead to infection and pain. This area, and impaction, can also lead to cavities around the second molars.

Your orthodontist may also request extraction of third molars to allow room for your other teeth.
